• To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
• For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
• Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
• Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

• Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician
• Only use one heat-producing appliance plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time
• Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.
• Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home.
• Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.
• Test AFCIs and GFCIs once a month according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
• Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets, so you don’t have to use extension cords.

Our Process

The process for dealing with fire and water restoration are different, though they also have many similarities. In today’s blog, we start by providing an overview of our process of rebuilding and repairing properties after fire damage. 

No single fire damage restoration process is the same either, which is one reason why you shouldn’t do it on your own. Hire experts who know how to save as much of your property and restore it as completely as possible. 

Fire Damage Restoration Process

1. Confirm that the property is safe to enter — Before any fire damage repair can begin, we scrutinize your property for structural damage from the outside. No work can begin until your home is deemed safe to enter by an inspector. 
2. Inspect Damages — Once the property has been deemed safe to enter, our professionals carefully inspect and test rooms to determine the full extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step gives us the information we need to create a plan of action. 
3. Board up windows and place tarp on damaged roofs — To maintain security and protect against further damages, SERVPRO professionals may board up missing windows and walls and put a tarp on your damaged roof. 
4. Minimize the damage — One of the reasons why it’s important to call a professional restoration company as soon as possible after a fire has occurred is to minimize damages. Certain things, such as soot staining, can be reduced in impact if addressed soon enough. If left for too long, it can lead to permanent discoloration of sensitive materials such as carpeting, textiles, wood, and metals.
   
   Mitigating damages may involve carpet cleaning, and it may also involve things such as mold removal as well. Why would there be mold in your home after a fire? If there has been a wildfire, the fire extinguishing process can cause mold and mildew to quickly form in your home. Water damage can be caused when a fire is put out, which is one reason why the mold and mildew remediation process should begin as soon as possible to minimize damages. It is common for us to utilize dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process. 
   
   Another type of damage that can occur from a fire is rust and corrosion on metal surfaces. Air quality is also a major concern after a fire. In older homes with many nooks and crannies in older neighborhoods of the Big Island, it may be even more challenging to deal with the lasting impact of a kitchen fire.

Additional types of cleaners after a fire include liquid creme cleaners such as Stain Scrub (#110)  used to clean, polish, and deodorize hard surfaces, and strong acid cleaners such as Stone and Porcelain Cleaner (#355) to remove soot and smoke from stone and brick. It is essential to understand which of these chemical cleaning agents may react with each other before use. For example, acid cleaners should not come too close to cleaners containing bleach because a toxic chlorine gas could release, causing harm if inhaled.

Shellac paint, which we often use when mitigating fire damages, in general, it is best used to seal the wood. Typical fire mitigation process consists of removal of all fire affected materials, followed with pressure washing of the remaining pieces to remove all smoke debris and one of the final steps in fire mitigation is sealing the wood with shellac paint, which seals odor. Shellac has many other uses as well, it is often used by artists to seal the wood, to prevent color changes and to some extent it does make it also waterproof.
